Welcome to Woodpeckers class where we work hard and play hard! Here we offer a broad and balanced curriculum which is tailored to the current cohort of children to ensure that learning is fun with just the right amount of challenge for each individual learner. As children are now well established in Key Stage 2, a key focus for Woodpeckers' class is for children to develop their independence, resilience and positive attitude towards learning. We love it when we make mistakes in Woodpeckers because they are proof that we are learning! We offer a safe environment where children can feel comfortable making these mistakes and we encourage children to unpick their mistakes to gain a much better understanding of their work. We also provide a wealth of supporting resources which the children can access independently to support their learning and we offer support to help them understand which methods work best for the individual. We understand that each child learns in different ways and we endeavour to facilitate this in a variety of different ways including individual and standing workstations. Developing these life-long learning skills is of key importance as it allows children to take ownership of their own personal learning journey without comparing themselves unnecessarily to their peers! We are all on our own individual path and each child is encouraged to make their own progress in their own time.
Throughout the year spent in Woodpeckers, we will journey back to the prehistoric Stone Age, which always offers a fabulous school trip out to our wonderful local areas, to more recent events such as the Suffragette Movement. We will spend a term taking part in our wonderful Forest School lessons in Oakfrith Woods which are always extremely well-received by the children. We offer many opportunities for the children to be creative in our art and design technology lessons with recent work including recreating a collaborative landscape painting of our school and making our very own Christmas Slippers! Every other year, children in Woodpeckers are given the opportunity to go on their first residential which is also excellent fun whilst reinforcing those learning skills of resilience, team-work and perseverance.
We pride ourselves on having high behaviour and learning expectations both in and out of the classroom and these enable our children to take part in an abundance of activities where the behaviour and politeness of the children is always commented on positively. We always endeavour to support the children to be well-rounded, kind and caring members of our community with good, positive learning skills that will see them continue on their learning journey after Woodpeckers, with the tools they need to succeed.
