Here in Robins Class we endeavour to ensure all children develop and thrive as they begin and continue the first two years of their school journey. Our Year 1 children are essential in helping the YR children establish and maintain our rules and routines.
During their time in Robins Class, children have extended opportunities to learn through play within a nurturing and safe environment. Learning takes place both inside and outside of our classroom, with opportunities that allow the children to grow, develop and challenge themselves.
Through a mixture of carefully planned adult led focus activities and more spontaneous child led activities the children develop skills and understanding in the 7 areas of learning that make up the Early Years Framework.
Children in early years also learn a lot through enquiry and questions. Our themed learning each term introduces them to new experiences and allows the children to learn about the world around them.
It is in Robins Class where children learn to read and write and we place great emphasis on the daily teaching of phonics and encouraging a love of books which are ever present in our classroom. We use the Little Wandle Systematic Synthetic Programme offering daily phonics, intensive reading sessions three times a week and regular assessment and catch up sessions to ensure that "no child is left behind" in their reading journey.
In September the emphasis is on ensuring that children settle into school, become familiar with the classroom and establish rules and routines. We also support them to become independent and form good friendships.
All of our learning, throughout the year, takes place through themes, this begins in the Autumn Term with a History focus as we study farming in the past and transport. After the Christmas holidays we take a trip to the top of the world in Geography where we visit the Arctic and find out whether we would like to live there or not. In Term 4 we travel back in time to learn all about Florence Nightingale and visit her in Scutari hospital. We complete the year with dinosaur hunting and dipping our toes into a make believe sea for our summer term themes. We will even get to spend a term taking part in our wonderful Forest School lessons in Oakfrith Woods. The children love to explore and most importantly get muddy!
As the year progresses, the children will be exposed to many varied experiences as we explore, Music, Art, Science, PSHE , Computing, Design & Technology and PE all of which form a broad and rich curriculum for our youngest children in the school.
We pride ourselves on having excellent behaviour and learning expectations both in and out of the classroom and this behaviour of the children is always commented on positively.
Each term, a letter with an overview of what we are learning about is sent out to all parents/carers. Throughout the year we are always exploring and observing how seasons change around us and celebrating the children’s achievements. We share these via Weduc and the termly newsletter. We hope parents enjoy looking at what we do!
